Background of the Study
Digital skills training is emerging as a critical factor in enhancing youth employability in today’s technology-driven economy. In Nigeria, where a large proportion of the population is young and digital transformation is accelerating, there is growing recognition of the need to equip young people with the competencies required to succeed in the digital era. Initiatives between 2023 and 2025 have focused on integrating digital literacy, coding, data analysis, and other technology-related skills into training programs for youth. These programs aim to address the skills gap that has long plagued the Nigerian labor market, thereby enhancing job readiness and fostering entrepreneurship in a rapidly evolving economic landscape (Oluwaseun, 2023). Digital skills not only improve individual employability but also contribute to overall economic productivity by enabling innovation and efficiency in various sectors. However, disparities in access to quality digital training remain a challenge, particularly for disadvantaged and rural youth (Eze, 2024).

Despite significant investments in digital education, many Nigerian youths continue to face barriers in securing employment due to a mismatch between the skills taught and industry needs. The rapid pace of technological change means that training programs must continually update their curricula to remain relevant, yet many initiatives lag behind current market demands. Moreover, the uneven distribution of digital infrastructure and resources further exacerbates the skills gap, leading to unequal opportunities among young job seekers. This study aims to investigate the impact of digital skills training on youth employability in Nigeria, focusing on how such training influences job acquisition, career progression, and entrepreneurial activity. Through a combination of quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews with trainees, educators, and employers, the research will provide insights into the effectiveness of digital training initiatives and suggest improvements for bridging the digital divide (Eze, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Despite growing investments in digital skills training, youth unemployment in Nigeria remains stubbornly high. A critical problem is that many digital training programs do not fully align with the rapidly changing demands of the labor market, resulting in a persistent gap between the skills acquired and the competencies required by employers (Oluwaseun, 2023). This mismatch not only hampers individual job prospects but also limits the overall contribution of youth to economic growth. Furthermore, disparities in access to quality training—particularly between urban and rural areas—exacerbate existing inequalities, leaving many young people unprepared for the digital economy. Inadequate funding, outdated curricula, and limited industry partnerships further diminish the potential of digital skills training to improve employability. The study seeks to address these issues by critically evaluating the impact of digital skills training on youth employability, identifying the barriers to effective training, and proposing strategies to enhance the relevance and accessibility of such programs (Eze, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the effectiveness of digital skills training programs in improving youth employability in Nigeria.

  • To identify the key challenges and gaps in current digital training initiatives.

  • To propose targeted interventions to align digital skills training with labor market demands.

Research Questions

  • How does digital skills training affect the employability of Nigerian youth?

  • What are the main barriers preventing effective digital skills acquisition?

  • What policy measures can enhance the impact of digital training on youth employment?

Research Hypotheses

  • H₁: Participation in digital skills training is positively correlated with improved employment outcomes among Nigerian youth.

  • H₂: Inadequate alignment between training curricula and industry needs significantly undermines program effectiveness.

  • H₃: Enhanced public–private partnerships can improve the relevance and reach of digital skills training programs.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on digital skills training programs for youth in Nigeria from 2010 to 2025, drawing on survey data, training program records, and interviews with key stakeholders. Limitations include potential selection biases and regional disparities in training quality.

Definitions of Terms

  • Digital Skills Training: Educational programs focused on developing technology-related competencies.

  • Youth Employability: The capacity of young people to secure, retain, and progress in meaningful employment.

  • Digital Divide: The gap between individuals with access to digital technologies and those without.
